First we built it small. 2,135 real moms and dads answered it, and we checked that every question truly worked. Michael C. Frank, of Stanford, helped review the milestones for ages 0–24 months.

Then Stanford looked on its own. Researchers Stenhaug, Ram and Frank studied 21,861 children from Kinedu's data and published what they found in The Structure of Developmental Variation in Early Childhood.

Then we tested it at full scale. We checked every expected age against what 3.5 million children actually did — about 280 million real answers.

Each figure with its exact unit: caregivers, children and answers are not interchangeable, and we keep them straight.

How the instrument thinks

It doesn't ask what your baby already mastered.
It asks what they're just starting to learn.

Questions about things every baby already does teach us nothing. So Kinedu asks about what's just appearing — skills about half of children that age have. That means many honest answers are “not yet”. And that's not behind — that's exactly where the interesting things are happening.

What we found

Four findings, each with its number and its limit.

From our 2026 study, Coupling and Differentiation in Early Development: 470 million observations, 3.5 million children. Every finding comes with its number, its certainty grade, and what it does not mean.

The expected ages match reality.

We checked every milestone against 280 million real answers: the age when 75% of kids actually reach it. The median gap is zero.

Doesn't mean your baby should hit each age exactly. The normal range spans months.

In year one, everything moves together. Then each area finds its own pace.

Stanford saw it first; we confirmed it in 3.5 million children, about 160× more. The link roughly halves by the first birthday.

Doesn't mean the areas disconnect. They soften, but never fully separate.

A starting point is not a destiny.

Where a child starts explains 37% of where they land later, but just 1.5% of how fast they grow. Starting behind doesn't mean growing slower.

Doesn't mean the 37% is a forecast. It says almost nothing about pace.

We measured the proud-parent effect on ourselves.

Generous answers lift a child's scores a little. Strip that out and the link between areas barely moves, from 0.728 to 0.694.

Doesn't mean it's fully mapped. Measurable in ~11% of kids, so 5% is a floor. That's the C.

What the record shows

Some skills hand off. Others stay for life.

A skill's window isn't just when it appears. It's when it's actively being built. Some skills are stepping stones that get replaced by something more advanced. Others, once gained, stay. The assessment knows the difference, and stops asking about what a child has already moved past.

Babbling hands off to first words.

Babbling builds early: half of children by 5 months. As children move toward first words, the assessment shifts its attention from babbling to early speech.

Walking arrives, and stays.

Half of children by 19 months, three quarters by 29, and once gained, never handed off. The wide range is real: children reach it at genuinely different ages.
