But reality for any parent looks very different. It looks like a father sitting on the kitchen floor at 7:15 in the morning, trying to make the school carpool on time while running late for work, “holding space” for a three-year-old who is screaming because her banana broke in half. The father knows, somewhere deep in the rational part of his brain, that this is developmentally normal. He has read the posts. He understands that a three-year-old does not yet have the capacity to regulate an intense emotional response. He is trying to do the right thing.
The right thing, as described by the parenting internet, involves narrating the child’s emotions back to her (“I see that you’re feeling frustrated about the banana”), validating the experience (“It’s okay to feel sad when something breaks”), and waiting for the storm to pass without any further guidance on emotional regulation or any adult authority that would get the morning back on track.
Meanwhile, three other children need breakfast, school starts in twenty minutes, and the broken banana is now on the floor.
